Why choose a natural mattress for your baby?
All conventional mattresses are, by law, treated with flame-retardant chemicals. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are typically used, even though PBDE exposure is linked to numerous adverse health effects. Less toxic flame-retardants are sometimes used, but they are still toxic. Pure wool is naturally flame resistant, and can be used instead of chemicals to satisfy the fire safety laws.
Conventional mattresses may also contain materials such as foam, which may contain chemical catalysts, surfactants, emulsifiers, pigments, formaldehyde, benzene, and toluene, and can off-gas further chemicals.
Most crib mattresses are wrapped in vinyl. Vinyl (polyvinyl chloride, PVC) is considered to be one of the most toxic and environmentally unfriendly plastics known. Since PVC is a hard plastic, phthalates are added to plasticize it. It is now widely known that phthalates are endocrine disruptors associated with an array of health issues. Other common additives to PVC include lead, cadmium and various biocides. A vinyl covered mattress can leach a variety of contaminants into the air surrounding it.
We spend so much of our time sleeping, that it is important to have a clean sleeping environment. Babies are especially vulnerable to pollutants in their immediate environment.

The Wool
All Sueno wool fillings and batting are 100% organic. The pure wool used in the quilting process is shorn from sheep that have grazed only in pastures free from pesticides and herbicides. The wool is washed without detergents, chemicals, chlorine or bleach - just hot water and soap. It is processed without the use of oils or bonding agents.
With the craftsmanship born of centuries of experience, the company processes the raw fleece into a high quality end-product through careful sorting, washing and drying. The wool fibre produced retains 1-2% lanolin oil, a completely natural dust-mite repellant.
This wool comes from Argentina, in the region of Tierra Del Fuego in Patagonia. The sheep are bred carefully and live a stress-free life. The Estencia (farms) are very large, 50km x 50km. This means that they only encounter humans twice a year; once for de-worming and once to get shaved.
The climate in Patagonia is very dry, filled with short shrubs and rocks. Because of this climate, no agriculture has ever grown on this land, leaving the soil pure and organic. The temperature ranges between 8-25 degrees celsius, keeping the sheep's wool thick year round. The type of sheep is called Corriedale. They provide wool that is denser, more resilient to its shape, and with a rough finish - properties that are excellent for mattresses, pillows and comforters.
Sueno products are very carefully monitored. They do not permit the use of plastic, baling twine, mothballs or strong chemicals. Only vegetable based soaps and other agents are used for washing, lubrication and static control. All the wool used to manufacture their batting is certified through OIA and GOTS, both being the strongest independent Organic Certifiers in the world.
